Don’t turn Teoh into racial issue, Nazri warns opposition

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 – People, especially the opposition, should stop speculating on the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock or make it a racial issue.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the opposition, especially the DAP’s parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, should let police investigate before making any conclusion.

“Do not divert the issue to something else, I’m the Minister of Law, I know what I said and don’t try to put words into my mouth, I think he’s the one who should shut up and not make a racial issue out of this. Allow the police to investigate,” Nazri told reporters after his speech at the ‘Forum on Integrity and Compliance: The Malaysian Agenda’ organised by Siemens here today.

Q: How come PNSB paid RM110,000 for your presidential suite in Honolulu?

A: I am not sure. It was all organised by them. And I didn’t ask. I didn’t even get to enjoy the suite or the facilities. I just used it for sleeping. I returned from the programme at midnight and by 8am I am up.

Q: People are shocked by the RM1.7mil spent for the Disney trips?

A: That was decided by the management. I am actually a very simple man. I do not ask for these kind of things. Maybe they said as a chairman, that is my entitlement and they did that.

Q: You say you are a simple man but people would disagree because you fly first class and stay at expensive presidential suites?

A: You must remember when I was the (PNSB) chairman. I have my entitlement. If I were to reduce my entitlement to what an officer gets then what is the officer going to reduce to? I am the chairman. There is the deputy chairman, board of directors, government officers going along. If I fly business class (not first class), then what happens to my state secretary? He will complain. If I am travelling alone it is easier. But I am travelling with a group of people and if I downgrade myself – it’s a problem for the others. But I never ask (for the pricey presidential suites or first class flights). Whatever they provide, I go along with. I just tell them to give me a full itinerary on these trips. I want a full programme with investors and companies.

Q: But isn’t the RM1.7mil spent on the Disney trips wasteful?

A: No. The trip has so many purpose. Look at the effect, the officers got good exposure. And we get to bring investments to the state. Usually when I go on these trips, my programme is packed from morning to midnight to visit companies, factories, business associates, governors. That’s how we have increased the state’s investments from RM4bil a year to more than RM6 to RM7 bil a year. The RM1.7mil spent used proper channels and we got RM50bil investment (over the last eight years). If we spend RM5 mil for trips but it brings in RM50bil worth of investment, what’s wrong with that? Just look at Selangor now. The RM11.8bil last year was the result of my investment not Pakatan’s. They just try to take credit for it. But now investments have dwindled to RM6bil. I worry that it’s going to wind down to RM4bil. And we used to get RM17mil from sand mining but when PKR took over the state, they got only RM3mil. And they promised the people that they could collect RM250mil for sand mining. As far as I am concerned all the trips I made bring a lot of development to Selangor and introduced new concepts. The ideas come from these trips. I stopped over in Dubai for few days because I got the Sepang Gold Coast idea from Dubai’s The Palm development. I don’t know why the state cancelled the River Canal City project. They should proceed because it can spur the economy.

KUALA LUMPUR 14 April – Orang Melayu perlu bangkit dan bersatu dalam berhadapan dengan tuntutan kaum lain yang kini dilihat semakin keterlaluan.

Mereka juga perlu sedar dan insaf dengan situasi politik semasa yang menyaksikan pelbagai tuntutan hingga boleh menjejaskan kekuatan politik orang Melayu.

Sehubungan itu, orang Melayu diminta tidak tunduk kepada tuntutan keterlaluan tersebut sebalik bangkit bersatu bagi mempertahankan hak dan kepentingan mereka.

Ahli Parlimen Pasir Mas, Datuk Ibrahim Ali berkata, pemimpin bukan Melayu dalam hal ini perlu sedar yang sesebuah kerajaan itu boleh sahaja untuk tidak ‘melayan’ tuntutan mereka.

Katanya, jumlah kerusi terbanyak di Parlimen adalah milik Melayu dan ia cukup untuk membentuk sebuah kerajaan berasaskan wakil rakyat Melayu semata-mata di negara ini.

Katanya, justeru, dari segi politiknya kerajaan itu sepatutnya memenuhi apa sahaja yang menjadi kehendak Melayu kerana mereka adalah majoriti dan bukan asyik bertolak ansur dengan bukan Melayu.

‘‘Parti Melayu akan kuat bila Melayu dijaga. Jadi UMNO kena fokus orang Melayu. Jadi UMNO tak perlu takut kerana saya lihat bila UMNO itu kuat orang bukan Melayu automatik akan sokong juga Barisan Nasional (BN) macam dulu,’’ katanya kepada Utusan Malaysia di sini hari ini.

Beliau mengulas pandangan mengenai situasi politik semasa yang menyaksikan kedudukan politik Melayu seakan terancam dengan tuntutan bukan Melayu pada masa kini.

Ahli Parlimen Sri Gading, Datuk Mohamad Aziz berkata, parti pemerintah ketika ini tidak boleh merasa bimbang untuk membuat apa sahaja keputusan yang dilihat perlu untuk membantu orang Melayu.

“UMNO kalau kita tengok Fasal 3 perlembagaannya ialah memperjuangkan hak Melayu.

“Pada masa sama orang Melayu pun kenalah sedar, asyik bercakaran sesama sendiri, tak untung Melayu sedangkan kita main politik untuk apa kalau tidak untuk membela Melayu.

“Jadi UMNO dan Pas kena duduk, tak kan dalam berbeza tak ada persamaan. Atas persamaan ini kita duduklah semeja dulu,” jelasnya.

Pemimpin UMNO, Datuk Seri Dr. Rais Yatim menegaskan, dalam soal wakil Kabinet misalnya, semua pihak harus menerima pilihan Perdana Menteri kerana ia bidang kuasa beliau.

“Saya fikir kalau dilayan, Najib tak akan ada kerja lain.

“Apa pun ini akan mengajar UMNO supaya terus kuat. Bila kuat, orang segan, kalau lemah orang kucar kacirkan,” ujarnya yang juga Ketua UMNO Bahagian Jelebu.

Ketua Pembangkang Dewan Undangan Negeri Selangor, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir Toyo berkata, hak orang Melayu tidak harus dilepaskan dalam usaha kerajaan memenuhi kehendak masyarakat pelbagai kaum.

“Biar wujud situasi menang-menang. Kita tidak boleh biar sebelah pihak sahaja menang. Kalau kita nak penuhi apa yang mereka nak, jangan pula kita lepaskan apa yang jadi hak kita,’’ katanya.

Timbalan Presiden Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS), Syed Anuar Syed Mohamad berkata, walaupun kerajaan mahu menekankan konsep Satu Malaysia yang menyatukan rakyat pelbagai kaum, langkah juga perlu dilakukan bagi mengembalikan keharmonian di kalangan orang Melayu sendiri.

“Dalam keadaan sekarang ini, orang Melayu berhadapan banyak cabaran semasa dan kita perlu mencari cara untuk memastikan kaum itu tidak berpecah-belah,” katanya.

Katanya, UMNO dan Pas tidak boleh melengah-lengahkan masa lagi untuk bekerjasama dalam memajukan orang Melayu.

Ketua Umum Badan Bertindak Perpaduan Melayu (BBPM), Osman Abu Bakar yang sependapat dengan GPMS berkata, cadangan yang baik seperti itu perlu dilaksanakan secepat mungkin.

Katanya, kerjasama antara dua parti politik itu bukan sahaja akan memberi faedah kepada orang Melayu sahaja tetapi juga kaum lain.

Tambahnya, penyatuan UMNO dan Pas perlu menjadi batu loncatan untuk mengeratkan semua rakyat berbilang kaum di negara ini.

“Sememangnya usaha ke arah itu akan mengambil masa tetapi sekurang-kurangnya kita tidak hanya bercakap atau mencadangkan sahaja,’’ tambahnya.

Umno Needs Psychological Warfare Team To Ward Off Opposition Allegations

KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 (Bernama) — The Barisan Nasional (BN), especially Umno, needs to form a psychological warefare team to deal with opposition allegations against the coalition or Umno.

Home Minister and Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said besides this, the party’s strategies, integrity and credibility also needed to be enhanced to draw public attention.

“Our problem is that we have allowed negative public perceptions about us to persist. When negative perceptions have taken root, it is difficult for us to get out of the situation,” he said at a press conference at Angkasapuri, here, today.

Syed Hamid said having a psychological warfare team could make the party more mature and ward off negative public perceptions about it.

“When something happens or an issue arises, there must be quick action to remove or diffuse wrong perceptions against us.

“We are weak in information dissemination and propaganda, while the opposition is strong in mounting a propaganda,” he said.

Well, you are right in a way. UMNO became weaker if compared to 10 years ago when Internet was not so well established in Malaysia. KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has refuted the idea that Umno bullies its partners in the Barisan Nasional.

“People say Umno is a party that likes to bully. I actually have no idea how to bully people,” the BN chairman said when opening the 55th MCA General Assembly today.

“This is the strategy used by the opposition to destabilise BN. The issue of Umno bullying components does not start from component parties.

“There is no such thing as bullying. Ask these people in the front,” the Umno president said referring to the MCA leaders on stage.

“If that is our way, a lot of components would have left. You think Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting or Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon want to be bullied?” he said, referring to the MCA and Gerakan presidents respectively.

“Ong is not a weak leader. He is strong and effective. Do not have the impression after he retires that he was a weak leader,” he added.

The prime minister also accused Hindraf of being a group that sought to discredit the MIC and its president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

“That is their work, to give rise to dissatisfaction with our leaders.”

At a press conference later, Abdullah refused to elaborate on whether he was referring to an opposition influence behind Hindraf, merely stating that a decision has been made and the group should no longer exist as it is illegal.

Abdullah also said that the suggestion by MCA Youth to create a second deputy chairman post in the coalition would have to be brought up at the BN convention early next year.

He insisted, however, that the current practice is still a good one as it has not caused any division in the coalition after 50 years.

“This is a big issue, and must be brought to the convention, not just a supreme council meeting,” he said.

He also said that at this point no amendments to the Internal Security Act were being discussed and refuted any element of abuse of power in the use of the legislation.

“Other countries have similar Acts and some have created such an Act in recent times,” he said, citing nations such as the United States and Britain as examples.

Due to step down as Umno president in March, Abdullah said that at the moment he is concentrating on the three legislations he has promised to push through by then — the setting up of a Judicial Appointments Commission, an independent anti-corruption body and a Special Complaints Commission on enforcement agencies.

Damn it! This is clearly a desperate move by desperate politicians. You think the more you oppress, the more control you have?

Yes, we must rebel, we must resist oppression, we must trash this inhuman and undemocratic draconian law.

But first thing first, we have to stay calm and do not get fooled by the Government. As what the Malaysia-Today team has mentioned:

Remember May 13. The government is trying to use the same methods to make people angry so that if we all take to the streets to protest, it will basically give them a free ticket to arrest more people. So we must be clear on what NOT to do. Let’s not fall into their trap.

I am being told many political party leaders are now talking about what is proper to say in public, so when commenting please exercise the same restraint.

Next, we also need to know that RPK has not associated himself to any power or position. He is just like you and me except that he means well, can swear better and can talk louder. So, there is NOTHING for the government to gain by arresting him except to perpetuate their rule and to create the emotions to help them stay in control.

People are not stupid or ignorant anymore. Today, we have the internet and mobile phones. We can always alert each other on the progress. Unlike 1969, when you are thirsty for news, you may get angry and you would go to the streets. Not today.

Thank you all voters in Permatang Pauh, congrats to Permatang Pauh’s “new” MP.

Anwar’s wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, won the seat with a 13,388 majority at the March 8 general elections.

The official voter turnout was 81.1 percent, or 47,410 out of 58,459 registered voters – which was much higher than what the EC had stated earlier. There were 599 spoilt votes.

The turnout is slightly higher than March 8 – 12 votes more, to be exact.

Meanwhile, outside the main counting centre Tuanku Bainun Teaching Institute, thousands of jubilant PKR supporters had gathered to embrace their leader’s return to Parliament.

PKR vice-president Azmin Ali was there to address the crowd numbering some 6,000. Other party leaders like R Sivarasa and Tian Chua were also there.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and PAS’ Husam Musa were also there.

Anwar also addressed the ecstatic group of supporters, thanking voters for their support. Tian said that the overwhelming victory showed that “the prime minister’s racial politics is bankrupt”.

The EC made the official announcement at 10.05pm. Only Anwar and Hanafi were present at the announcement. Also present was Wan Azizah.

After the announcement was made, Anwar said that he was touched by the victory.

The victor immediately went to meet his supporters after that.

He claimed to have met two of the accused in the Altantuya Shaaribuu trial – Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri – in Sungai Buloh prison where he was remanded since Tuesday.

Both of them shouted and threatened him and the prison authority was worried about his safety, he told reporters on being released.

Since they couldn’t guarantee his safety, the authorities have asked him to post bail and he agreed.

He also said that he did not go on hunger strike as reported earlier but had refused to eat food provided by the prison.

“The food is paid by rakyat (the people). I don’t think the rakyat money is being well spent,” he said.

A handcuffed Raja Petra was brought to the court from the prison at about 9.25am. He was wearing the same yellow long-sleeved shirt and jeans that he wore on the day he was charged.

There were some 50 supporters waiting for his arrival at the court, who clapped their hands upon seeing him. He raised his hands to acknowledge them.

The supporters wore yellow T-shirt with Raja Petra’s face and the words ‘Justice for all…tantuya’ imprinted on it.

Raja Petra, who has been charged for sedition, had opted to go to prison instead of paying the RM5,000 bail three days ago, which he said he could not afford.

Malaysia Today news portal webmaster Raja Petra Kamarudin has agreed to post bail after meeting his wife Marina Lee Abdullah at the Sungai Buloh prison this morning.

Marina is expected to arrive in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court soon to post bail.

Raja Petra, who has been charged for sedition, had opted to go to prison instead of paying the RM5,000 bail two days ago, which he said he could not afford.

Hearing has been fixed from Oct 6 to 10 and Raja Petra would have to remain in custody until the hearing date in five months’ time should he decide not to post bail.

Yesterday, he refused to meet everyone, including his wife, and was said to have gone on a hunger strike.

Malaysia Today news portal webmaster Raja Petra Kamaruddin was today charged with sedition at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court over an article which he wrote in his website.

The article allegedly implied that Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife were involved in the killing of a young Mongolian woman.

Raja Petra claimed trial to the charge. He was charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act for publishing seditious article on April 25 on Malaysia Today.

Hearing has been fixed from Oct 6 to 10 and Raja Petra was granted a bail of RM5,000, which he refused to post, deciding instead to remain in custody until the hearing date five months from today.

He has been taken to the Sungai Buloh prison to be remanded.

If found guilty, Raja Petra could be jailed for a maximum of three years and/or face a fine of up to RM5,000.

The charge sheet also highlighted nine paragraphs of the article which was titled ‘Let’s send the Altantuya murderers to hell‘ as seditious [See chart below].

Wife stunned

“At the moment, I’m quite stunned by what he has done (not wanting to be bailed), so let me see him tomorrow. And we will take it from there.”

When asked if their family was prepared for the charge preferred against Raja Petra, Marina said that she would be discussing the matter with her children later today.

“I don’t think that anyone is prepared for this. I just called my kids to tell them about this. We’ll go back and have a family gathering to discuss this.”

She also said that she was disappointed with the manner Raja Petra was treated by the police in the run-up to being charged today.

“I’m not angry but I’m very disappointed with the way things are done in a hurry. They send us to this court (Jalan Duta) and then push us to the other court (Petaling Jaya).

“They send us to this police station and say come tomorrow and then they come to the house to take the computer. And this has happened even today when they want to charge him.

“We went there at 8.30am and waited till 11am and they say it’s not there and tell us to come to PJ Sessions (Court). It’s a circus. It doesn’t look as though they are serious. It’s trumped up charges. As though as everything is done in a hurry,” she said.

Meanwhile another person was also charged for sedition at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

Syed Akbar Ali, a businessman, was charged for posting a comment in Raja Petra’s Malaysia Today.

Summoned yesterday

Late yesterday, Raja Petra was ordered to surrender at the Jalan Duta court complex at 9.30am to face a sedition charge.

Talking to reporters at the Jalan Duta court complex this morning, Raja Petra said that he was a victim of political persecution.

“I knew this was coming,” he said.

“This is merely an excuse to arrest me, detain me or charge me. But this excuse is a stupid excuse.

“Once they charge me and the trial has been set, we shall point out not only do they have no case but it is absolutely political persecution,” he added.

He said that he was aware of a call made by an Umno leader from Petaling Jaya (Utara) about three weeks ago that “they should find ways to arrest me”.

News about Raja Petra’s case spread like a wild fire last night and this morning a large crowd of about 100 people had gathered at the court complex to show support for him.

Also present were DAP leaders Lim Kit Siang and Ronnie Liu as well as Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Nurul Izzah said that it was a duty of everyone to come and show their support to Raja Petra.

“Especially since Malaysia Today was the primary source of a lot of unearthing of scandals especially corrupt practices of the leadership and the government.

“And it (Malaysia Today) has helped opened the eyes of the nation to what is going on and what is wrong with the country. It played a huge role in the last elections.”

Najib’s statement

Last Friday, Raja Petra was called in by the police to have his statement recorded over an Internet posting two weeks ago pertaining to the murder case of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a Mongolian national.

Najib subsequently issued a denial through his press secretary Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad, whereas Rosmah has also denied the allegations against her.

The Altantunya murder trial is currently on-going at the Shah Alam.

In an apparent reference to Umno, MCA has called on other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to accord it due respect in the aftermath of the ruling coalition’s disastrous performance in the March 8 polls.

“The BN cooperation must be there and it must have enough mutual respect,” MCA president Ong Ka Ting told Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur last Friday.

As the second largest Chinese-based BN component party leader, Ong said the ruling coalition must be sensitive and respectful to the need of all races following the strong message sent by voters.

By now, he said Umno leaders must be aware of what went wrong in the past which contributed to the poor showing. He also hinted for the government to accord a more equal status to the non-Malays.

“We expect the Umno leaders when they talk about something for the Malays, they must also think about the lower income group of Chinese and Indians, what plans have you got for them?”

“When you implement policies to help the Malay community, what about the non-Malay community? They also have their problems,” he said.

Bound by code of conduct

In the March 8 polls, BN was dealt a huge blow when it was denied its long-held two-third majority in Parliament and lost four states to Pakatan Rakyat apart from failing to wrest Kelantan away from PAS.

A major reason for this was Chinese and Indian voters turning their backs on MCA and MIC due to resentment over numerous issues.

The discontent has been consistent within the Chinese community since last year. As revealed in a recent poll, the grievances were, among others, over the keris-raising incident in Umno Youth, religious controversies and economic issues.

The Chinese community showed their unhappiness with MCA – which has not been seen as vocal enough to protect the community’s interest – through the poll.

The elections saw a significant reduction in the party’s representation. In Parliament, from 31, the party now only has 15 representatives. At the state level, the number dwindled from 76 to 31.

Responding to this, Ong said it was merely a perception that the party – with four ministers sitting in the cabinet – has not done enough for the community.

“The problem is once you are sworn in as a minister, you cannot disclose anything to anybody and must stick to the code of conduct as a minister,” he said.

‘I don ‘t want to praise myself’

The 51-year-old president, who took over as party chief in 2003, also rejected the argument that he is ‘weak’ in dealing with these contentious issues.

“I don’t want to angkat bakul (praise myself) to say I am good but certainly, I have certain qualities in me and it is not as what some people perceive,” he said.
