Asian markets tumble on China dip

Electronic graph showing Sydney's ASX stock index

Sydney’s ASX is no exception to the bad news

Asian stock markets have dived lower after the biggest drop in Chinese stocks in a decade triggered a steep slide in global markets.

Japan’s TOPIX index dipped 3.88% while the country’s Nikkei 225 stock index lost 3.56%.

The slips were echoed in Seoul, Sydney and Singapore but in Shanghai itself the index began recovery, rising 1.2%.

Wednesday’s falls were sparked by a near-9% slide in Shanghai 24 hours earlier over fears on China’s economy.

Coincidence?

Trance, Hindu Pilgrimage and Transformation

09 Mar 2007 Friday | 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm | Ngee Ann Auditorium @ Asian Civilisation Museum

A talk by invited speaker, Dr Carl Vadivella Belle, Hindu Chaplain, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia.

Thaipusam, an annual Hindu festival, is widely known for devotees spearing their cheeks with long, shiny steel rods and piercing their chests and backs with small, hook-like needles in penance. It is claimed that devotees feel no pain, do not bleed from their wounds and have no scars left behind. In examining the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, the speaker will suggest that a particular form of trance (arul) plunges the devotees into a catalytic form of consciousness in which they are exposed to the deity’s transformative power.

All talks are free. No registration required. Admission charges to the galleries apply.

MyKad

Malaysia’s primary document or instrument for personal identification is the national identity card. This document is vitally important to the individual as it is used in virtually all inter-personal transactions. All citizens are required to apply for and carry their identity card from the age of 12.

The latest incarnation of national identity card is the MyKad, a microchip-based smartcard which securely stores various types of information for personal identification.Malaysians are required to apply for their MyKads by the end of 2005.

Applications may be made at offices of the National Registration Department.

After a long procrastination, I finally went to National Registration Department today to apply for MyKad.

Reached there around 10.00 am, 4 words to describe the crowd there – people mountain people sea.

I went to information counter to get my queue ticket.

Me: “Cik, saya nak apply MyKad.”

Officer A: “OK, ambik ticket ni, datang balik selepas pukul 2.45 petang.”

Me:

Fine, I went to have bah kut teh, bought a few books, had massage, and then went back to Registration Department again at 2.45pm.

Me: “Cik, saya nak renew IC.”

Officer B: “Eh?! OK, datang balik minggu depan.”

Me:

Fine! I will come back again 3 months later when my hair colour become black again.

XXXX,XXXX 。
